He was born to the two just before their group began a final siege against their long-standing enemy, a clan of bandits situated deep in the heart of the mesa. Fearing for their child's safety in times of brutal combat, the Merediths left the group and traveled north. Eventually they settled in a small homestead close to the border with Alberal and (in the case of Joshua and Suzanna) have lived there ever since. From childhood all the way to adulthood the only real people in Uther's life were his parents. The Merediths got occasional visits from a passing trader or two once every month or so, but the majority of the time it was just the three of them. Joshua and Suzanna knew that, although their home and the forest around it would be sufficient during his childhood, sooner or later Uther would want to strike out on his own in the world. As such, they made it their goal to ensure he knew the basic skills needed in order to survive, both in the wilds and within civilization. He learned how to launder clothes, cook meals in a kitchen or over a campfire, repair household tools, perform simple carpentry, and more; the last skills his parents taught him were self-protection with armor and a weapon. The most important ones a man could know, they told him. After all, it was how they once made their living. Quite soon after he came of age Uther departed home with his father's old armor and mother's old axe to make something of himself. To him it seemed only fitting that he take the same profession his parents had, and so returned to the mesa of Ixion to find a new warband of his own to join. Several months of travel and unsuccessful attempts passed before his luck held out and he was accepted into a group led by one Lord Wulfgar. Uther remained with Wulfgar's army for several years. He rose to a sturdy position in the group during this time; newer members often looked up to him, and those on top valued his contributions. This was more than good enough for him, and he remained at his position more or less in the middle. The invasion of Chaos passed without much incident (the most Uther knew of it was through stories told by taverngoers in towns they traveled through, and paid it very little mind) until about eight months afterward, when Lord Wulfgar made the decision to attack the Silfursverds for some of their territory. His men marched to a pass on the border and, well... Without its leader the army was broken. Fights broke out between the senior members over who should lead those that fled instead of surrendering but Uther was not part of them. The bonds they had seemed to have died with Lord Wulfgar and he wanted nothing to do with any of them any more. So he left, and spent a great deal of time wandering Ixion. There were many other warbands like the one he left that maintained independence from the Silfursverds, but he didn’t stay with them for long. It just wasn’t the same for Uther. Now, twenty years after Wulfgar’s army fell apart, Uther makes his way to the grand city of Auroch. He has spent time as a very small-name mercenary earning more than enough to get by on his nomadic lifestyle. The idea of some fanciful treasure held inside a city of magic seems outlandish to him, and yet he knows that whatever it turns out to be, it will surely be less boring in the city. And less lonely.
